Are your eyelashes less than luscious and maybe short or thin? A lot of women dream of long, dark lashes that are full and fluttery. Many of us try hard to create the look with lash-thickening serums and mascaras or take the time to apply false lashes. It would be incredible waking up daily to spectacular lashes that don’t require much preening, right? That’s what a Latisse® treatment can do for you, ladies. It remains the only FDA-approved serum that is clinically proven to grow lashes. There is nothing else on the market that can rival Latisse® results.
A Latisse® treatment is never an inconvenience. In fact, it only takes minutes to apply the brush-on serum before you go to bed. That’s it, a simple and amazing beauty ritual.
The prescription treatment is sold in monthly packaging. For example, each box contains a 30-day supply of serum and 60 disposable brush-on applicators. That means using two sterile brushes nightly, one for each upper eyelid.
You place a single drop on to the applicator, and carefully brush it onto your upper eyelid only, close to the base of your lashes. Then, you toss the brush away. You repeat this step to the other eye with a new brush, and then, toss the applicator away.
There is zero downtime and nothing complicated to follow.
Gradual, Over Time
Latisse® works with the hair growth cycle but does not show instant results. The treatment is able to affect the eyelash cycle in two unique ways. First, Latisse® increases the length of the anagen phase (growth). Second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase.
Plenty of clinical trials have been conducted on the treatment, and the research has shown that results begin appearing at eight weeks with full results on display at 12 to 16 weeks. Latisse® users all achieved longer, thicker and darker eyelashes.
If you’re frustrated by skimpy lashes and would like to try Latisse®, then consider our aesthetic team here at Lux: A Medical Spa in Bluffton, SC. They are knowledgeable in all beauty treatments and can show you how Latisse® works and determine if you are a candidate for the treatment. This product remains the gold standard for gorgeous lush lashes you grow yourself.

General aging is no fun for any of us. In fact, our skin begins getting older by 25. One of the reasons points to collagen loss. It drops in levels every year, and when that happens, our skin develops wrinkles, starts to sag and loses volume. In addition, our hyaluronic acid levels also reduce, so our skin gets drier and thinner over time. That is why it is essential to keep your skin supple with moisturizing. It cannot be stressed enough. Every complexion younger and older needs hydration, which is why it is important to moisturize your skin.
Part of Your Beauty Routine
Aesthetic experts would tell you that it’s never too early to care for your complexion. We hear so much about exfoliation for the skin, and that is key. Removing dead, old skin cells laying on the surface helps to unclog pores and get rid of bacteria and lead to a brighter complexion. After that, however, moisturization should follow to keep the skin healthy and hydrated.
There are a variety of excellent moisturizers out there to choose from, and all of them will help prevent dry skin. There are even creams for oily skin that are water-based and won’t make you break out or cause a greasy complexion.
Good moisturizers restore and maintain a protective skin barrier and are even suitable for sensitive skin, eczema, etc.
Hydrating Facial Treatments
Spas and dermatology offices also offer the client a wide range of options for maintaining a nourished complexion. A hydrating facial is one of these soothing treatments that deliver softer skin, rehydrate the complexion, improve elasticity, reduce age spots and sun damage and tame inflammation.
These advanced facials can contain a variety of active ingredients that help refresh your complexion and protect the skin from aging.
Protecting the Skin Barrier
Beauty science shows us that moisturization really makes a difference for your complexion. For instance, a 2010 study in the British Journal of Dermatology found that pampering your skin with moisture keeps it looking youthful. The research compared the number of wrinkles and levels of skin hydration in 122 women over a period of eight years.
The study showed that a dry complexion leads to wrinkles. On average, a 28-year-old woman had a 52 percent increase in visible wrinkles by the time she was 36 if she had dry skin. The research showed a 22 percent increase in women with well-hydrated skin.
Moisturizing your face and neck are essential for maintaining an ageless appearance. Here at Lux: A Medical Spa, our team of aesthetic experts can introduce you to hydrating treatments and beauty routines that deliver soft, smooth, supple skin. Many skin care experts agree that applying a retinoid cream is one of the smartest things you can do to develop an ageless complexion. Of course, it’s best to start young, but the prescription cream can dramatically transform even mature skin over time. Retinoid means that the ingredient is a derivative of Vitamin A, and it can deliver brighter, clearer skin that appears smoother and line-free. Great-looking skin comes from within, and that’s where a retinoid cream begins to work. It has the power to turn on fresh collagen production for a firmer, stronger skin foundation. It’s easy to use and gradually rejuvenates the complexion.
Retin-A and Retinol
Our skilled professionals at LUX: A Medical Spa can help you choose the proper retinoid cream for your skin type and skin condition. For example, Retin-A is the most powerful retinol available by prescription and has been used in dermatology since the 1960s. Plenty of clinical studies have been performed on the cream, and it emerged as a major skin care winner.
For instance, the cream was able to significantly improve fine wrinkling, mottled hyperpigmentation, roughness and epidermal thickness. The only downside for some is its strong and sometimes, irritating, drying effects.
If you want an anti-aging cream that is less harsh than Retin-A, an over-the-counter retinol, called retinol, can also improve lines and discoloration. It just delivers results a bit slower, but it, too, can dramatically transform your complexion.
Applying at Nighttime
Retinoid creams are sensitive to sunlight, and that is why these topicals are applied before going to bed. The ingredient itself doesn’t make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. Actually, skin care experts recommend beginning a retinoid routine in the summer because the humidity makes your skin less likely to dry out as it adjusts to the formula. Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30) as you would normally do.
To start your routine, apply your retinoid cream every third night to slowly build up a tolerance. If you’re not experiencing redness or flakiness, then try applying it every other night. Your complexion will adjust and accept the potent skin cream rejuvenator.
Beautiful, youthful-looking skin is something we can all achieve by using the proper products and leading a healthy lifestyle. You have tons of skin care choices out there, but a retinoid cream has the science and backing of numerous clinical trials that prove its effectiveness.
If you’re interested in trying a topical retinoid cream, then consider our team of complexion care experts here at LUX: A Medical Spa in Bluffton, SC. They have the knowledge and skills to help you reach your skin care goals. Contact us today to schedule your consultation!
If you live in Frederick and are bothered by wrinkles that are giving away your age, you should consider undergoing a BOTOX® treatment. Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard of these types of injections. When considering any type of cosmetic treatment, no matter how safe, you will likely have a number of questions that you want answered first: What is this treatment? How is it made? Would I make a good candidate for it?
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a safe injectable liquid that reduces the activity of certain facial muscles that cause what are known as dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles formed by underlying facial muscles. Some examples of dynamic wrinkles are forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and wrinkles between the eyebrows.
What is In the Product?
The product consists of a liquid containing a purified protein serum that is developed in a laboratory under extremely strict and controlled conditions. BOTOX® has an excellent safety profile and has been used for several decades for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles.
Is BOTOX® the Same Thing as a Filler?
No. BOTOX® and fillers contain different ingredients and work in a different way. While fillers contain substances like hyaluronic acid to fill in wrinkles by increasing skin volume, this product contains a safe botulinum toxin that temporarily paralyzes facial muscles that cause some forms of wrinkles.
What About My Results?
You should begin noticing results within a few days after your treatment. It could take about a week to achieve ideal results. Within around three months, you may begin noticing a slight return of facial muscle movement in the treated area. You can return at this time for a subsequent appointment to schedule additional injections so that you maintain your results.
What Happens at My Treatment?
The procedure itself is quite fast and painless. We will administer up to eight injections into facial muscles in the treatment area. You will be asked to make certain facial expressions after your injections. As strange as it may sound, this ensures that the product is evenly distributed under your skin.
Avoid sun exposure on the day of your treatment because this could increase blood circulation, leading to the dilation of blood vessels that disperses the product faster than desired. Wear a good sunscreen if you must go outdoors on the day of your treatment.
Schedule Your Treatment
If you are ready to say goodbye to dynamic wrinkles, or would like to request more information about BOTOX®, we warmly encourage you to reach out and make an appointment with Lux: A Medical Spa. CoolSculpting® is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments on the market today that is designed to remove unwanted fat from trouble spots on the body. If you are a Bluffton resident and you are interested in sculpting your body, we invite you to learn about the unexpected benefits that come from this treatment.
The Unexpected Benefits of CoolSculpting®
We are going to start with an expected benefit of this treatment. This treatment has the ability to damage fat cells in a particular area of your body without harming your skin or your internal organs. Once those fat cells freeze, they die. Then your body removes them in a natural way. After this, you can see areas that have been pudgy and unattractive slim down. This may be just what is needed to help you finally lose those last couple of pounds and sculpt areas of your body that have not responded to diet and exercise.
One unexpected benefit that you can enjoy thanks to this non-surgical treatment is a boost in confidence. When you walk into a store and try on a swimsuit, dress, or jeans, you will no longer feel any self-consciousness. This confidence is likely to benefit you in multiple areas of your life. It may give you just the boost you need to ask for a raise, ask your crush out on a date, or do other things that you have felt nervous to do.
Since fat cells are destroyed and removed from your body, you are actually going to be more resistant to gaining weight in certain areas. If you have this treatment performed on your belly, you will not be able to gain as much weight in this area if you neglect your lifestyle in the future. Of course, you will still have fat cells left in the area that will be able to grow. But with fewer fat cells in a particular area, you just will not deal with the same problem spots that you have now.
The results that you get with CoolSculpting® are gradual. It is good to know this so that you do not walk in expecting one thing and then walk away feeling disappointed. However, this is usually an unexpected benefit that many of our Bluffton clients enjoy. You basically do not need to worry about others asking you questions about having a cosmetic treatment performed. It will just look like you are slowly losing weight thanks to diet and exercise.

It’s essential to use good topical serums and creams to care for our complexions and maintain youthful skin. Where you purchase these products matters because the potency of your skin care formulas is most important. Shopping for drugstore or high-end boutique brands may sound inviting, but these over-the-counter products cannot affect facial rejuvenation unless they are labeled medical grade. There is a key difference. When you apply medical skin care formulas, you are getting stronger, active ingredients with higher concentrations. These products are dispensed and sold by licensed medical professionals and work on the structure and function of the skin.
Tailored Treatment Plan
Your skilled aesthetic specialist can create a customized skin care routine tailored to your unique skin care needs and personal beauty goals. This expert can determine what damage your complexion may have and how to treat a variety of issues that include fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, skin laxity, photoaging and more.
Medical grade formulas are able to penetrate more effectively into the deeper layers of the skin to correct problems. For example, vitamin C is a popular anti-aging ingredient found in both OTC skin care items and those at the medical level. A physician-dispensed brand with vitamin C may offer these serums in higher strengths. It would also be made with a higher stabilization factor than one found in a drugstore. Another plus is in the backgrounds of these quality products. Medical-grade skin care is subjected to rigorous and extensive testing and clinical studies.
The wonderful products you buy over-the-counter are still good for your complexion, but they are only able to treat the surface of the skin. Medical grade skin care can address issues that are happening at the dermal level and use their unique advanced delivery system to send those active ingredients to repair and rejuvenate.
You will see true skin changes when you visit your aesthetic expert and begin a medical skin care routine. These formulas go deep into the foundation to target collagen and elastin and speed up skin cell turnover. They are designed to help repair the skin barrier and stop chronic inflammation.

Millions of people have tried dieting and exercise to lose excess weight and have done a good job, but many of these same people never reach their desired goals. Some areas of fat accumulation, such as belly fat or love handles, are extremely difficult to reduce even with the strictest programs, and that is where CoolSculpting® may help you. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical, simple method of eliminating those stubborn pockets of fat with revolutionary, high-quality technology. This latest non-surgical fat reduction treatment was accepted by the FDA in 2017 and is performed right in our office in less than an hour. There is no hospital time or recovery time required; after the treatment, many people return to work as the CoolSculpting® begins to go to work as well.
How Does CoolSculpting® Work?
This non-surgical fat reduction process uses high-speed technology to freeze the fat cells directly under the machine. Multiple areas can be treated. These are all areas that are stubborn and difficult to reduce with dieting and exercise alone. During the treatment, the fat cells are frozen and begin to die. When the CoolSculpting® is completed, the dead fat cells are naturally washed out of the body. Within weeks, you will begin to see better curves appear, and in just months, the process will be finished, and your body has been subtly sculpted with no added effort on your part. You will most likely lose inches, not pounds, and the treated fat cells will be gone forever, never to return!
With CoolSculpting®, you are able to subtly sculpt away the extra fat that wants to hang on. Men and women alike have reported great results using this treatment. Freezing the fat cells and eliminating them naturally with the CoolSculpting® process allows you to create the sexy body you always dreamed of, and the results look completely natural!

The HydraFacial® treatment has been getting a lot of attention lately, and there’s a good reason. More and more individuals are experiencing this one-of-a-kind facial skin rejuvenation treatment, one that’s a lot simpler to perform than you might think. Although it’s a multi-step procedure, it can be completed in less than an hour, and the results immediately become apparent. This is more than just a simple scrubbing and cleansing. It involves a peel treatment and a nutrient serum infusion plus exfoliation and extraction. The result is a glowing, radiant countenance, and the skin, now able to breathe freely, can work its own magic to replace damaged tissue with healthy new growth.
A single HydraFacial® treatment can produce dramatic results that last for up to a year. The treatment can also be customized to address specific concerns such as brittle, dull skin, dark circles under the eyes, and non-set wrinkles. An overview of the treatment follows.
Concerning Multiple Skin Problems
A buildup of oil mixed with pollutants can result in clogged pores, meaning that the skin cannot breathe properly. Exposure to the sun can accelerate the deterioration of damaged skin cells, and scarring, freckles, and age spots become more prominent. The HydraFacial® treatment can correct all of these problems.
Performing the Treatment
We’ll examine your facial features and suggest either the traditional treatment or a customized procedure that focuses on one or more skin health problems. Basically, we begin the treatment by exfoliating the surface using a specialized rotary brush tool. We then apply glycolic or similar acid to the epidermis. The dermis is now exposed and ready for treatment.
We use a vacuum suction tool to get at the grime and oil that clogs the pores. Lastly, we use an infusion tool to introduce antioxidants and peptides. These penetrate through the dermal layers and immediately begin to supply the skin cells with nutrition.
We have at our disposal several boosting serums that target specific problems such as brittle, dull-appearing skin, wrinkles, and subsurface blemishes. By the time you leave our office, you’ll notice that your skin is softer and smoother. This improvement in skin texture continues for several weeks afterward as the nutrients really begin to have an effect. Remember that your skin is constantly rebuilding itself, but now it has the fuel for producing healthier replacement cells.
Turn Back the Aging Clock
The HydraFacial® is unlike any other skin revitalizing treatment currently being performed. You may not be ready for skin repositioning surgery, and you might be wary of laser resurfacing or dermabrasion. Try this alternative instead, and get ready to enjoy the smooth skin you had as a teen. Visit Lux: A Medical Spa in Bluffton to learn more. Contact us today to schedule your consultation!
- Ultraviolet rays are a form of radiation that our skin is exposed to on a daily basis. There are two types of UV rays. UVA rays are responsible for “aging” of the skin, including wrinkles. They are not blocked by glass in the car while driving, but they also will not burn you. Ever wondered why you don’t get burned on a long car trip? But over time, exposure to UVA rays leads to breakdown in collagen in the skin, increased laxity and wrinkles and discoloration, and it contributes to skin cancer risk. Check yourself in the mirror. You likely have more wrinkles and spots on the left side of your face due to driving in a car your whole life. Also, Dermatologists detect more skin cancers on the left side of the face from chronic UV damage on the left side.
- UVB rays are the major form of solar radiation that causes burning of the skin. Over time, multiple burns leads to increased risk for skin cancers, including melanoma, the most dangerous type.
- Most sunscreens block UVB rays to avoid sunburns. A great sunscreen should protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Buying sunscreen can be a daunting task. There is so much bad information out there regarding sunscreens. Controversy exists over the safety of sunscreens, but this fact is true: exposure to UV radiation without protection with sunscreen leads to increased risk of skin cancer, discoloration, wrinkles and skin laxity. To date, no scientific study has proven that it is safer to NOT use sunscreen.
- That being said, it is easy enough to avoid some of the controversial chemical sunscreens that you have heard about in the news lately. To do this, I recommend sticking with physical blocker sunscreens. Physical blockers include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide based sunscreen. These are mineral based sunscreens. Zinc is found in the white diaper rash cream we use on newborn babies, and titanium is an inert mineral found in many white foods that we eat (think white cake icing). I know, I know — you are thinking back to a lifeguard with a big white stripe of zinc on their nose in the 80s. Nowadays, the minerals are more finely processed, easier to spread and come in tinted forms that do not leave that pasty white look.
- When choosing a sunscreen, turn the bottle to the back side, and look for the bold print that says, “Active ingredients.” In that list, we want to see Zinc or Titanium listed there. If your natural skin tone is more tan, you may want to go for a tinted version which rubs in easier. If you are more light-skinned, you can probably use the white. Keep in mind the more finely the minerals are processed, the less of a white streak they leave behind. Processing costs more, so you may have to pay a few dollars extra for something that feels nice. Sometimes, it is a process of trial and error. At LUX~A Medical Spa, we carry a line called Elta MD, which includes many varieties of physical blocker sunscreen, and we have testers available for you to try before you buy. Don’t forget your lips too! Skin cancer on the lips can be devastating and is one of the more aggressive types. We have a Lumen Renew and Restore Lip Kit to help keep your lips in great shape. Another great option is to top off your sunscreen with a sunscreen powder. This takes the shine away and makes for easy reapplication.
- The best sunscreen is sometimes the one that you will actually use. If you hate how it feels, it makes you break out or it makes you sweat or feel greasy, try another. At LUX~A Medical Spa, we have experts who can help you find the exact sunscreen that will keep you safe and you will not mind using.
