What Is Botox?
Botox is the first and only treatment FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines look better in adults. The primary ingredient in Botox is onobotulinumtoxinA, a type of protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.
To understand how Botox works, it helps to understand how wrinkles form. There are two types of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Static wrinkles develop as a result of sun damage, poor diet, smoking and your genes. Dynamic wrinkles form after repeated facial movements.
Every time you laugh, cry, or smile, you make a little fold in the skin at certain points. After years of making the same facial expressions, creases end up developing in the skin. If you make fewer facial movements, you end up with fewer dynamic wrinkles.
The protein in Botox blocks the muscle movements that create dynamic wrinkles. If you have any of the following wrinkles, Botox might be right for you:
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Crow’s feet (at the corners of the eyes)
- Frown lines (also called “11’s”, located between the eyebrows)
Botox is FDA-approved and is safe when injected by a trained professional, such as a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, or plastic surgeon.
Working with a trained professional also allows you to customize your treatment results. Some patients want a very natural result, with the ability to make certain facial expressions while minimizing their lines and wrinkles. Before the injections, discuss your treatment goals with your practitioner, so they can determine how much to inject and where the most appropriate injection locations are.
Botox Treatment and Results
The treatment process with Botox is simple. When it’s time for your appointment, you let the practitioner know what areas you want to treat and what your concerns are. They then administer the Botox using a very fine needle. How many units you need depends on the size of the treatment area and how many areas you’re treating. The process usually takes about 10 minutes.
Once your appointment is over, you can go back to your regular activities right away, with few restrictions. If you scheduled Botox on your lunch break, you can return to work for the rest of the day. To minimize the risk of side effects, skip exercising or other strenuous activities in the 24 hours following your treatment.
You might notice some improvement in your lines and wrinkles starting a few days after Botox treatment. Usually, full results appear about a week or two later. Your results aren’t permanent. As the effects wear off, you’ll begin to move the muscles again, leading to the reappearance of certain lines. To keep up results, schedule maintenance treatments every three to six months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic dosing units are not the same as, or comparable to, any other botulinum toxin product.
