Medical Spa Treatments and Products for Rosacea

Rosacea is a very common skin condition that affects more than 16 million Americans and as many as 415 million people worldwide, according to the National Rosacea Society. While anybody can develop Rosacea, it’s most common in women between the ages of 30 and 60 — especially those with fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, and a family history of the condition.

So what is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic yet treatable skin condition that causes blushing or flushing of skin primarily on the face, though on rare occasions it can extend to other areas of the body. The cause of the skin condition is still unknown.

The condition tends to be characterized by “periods of flare-ups and remissions.” And while the facial redness — blushing or flushing of the skin — is the most common symptom, the condition can lead to several other symptoms, including:

  • Skin thickening
  • An acne-like rash
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Burning or stinging skin
  • Facial swelling
  • Dry skin
  • An enlarged nose
  • Eye irritation

Rosacea Subtypes

Because Rosacea can present with such varying symptoms, doctors have divided the condition into four different subtypes.

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR): Facial redness, flushing and visible blood vessels
  2. Papulopustular (acne) Rosacea: Acne-like breakouts/rash
  3. Phymatous Rosacea: Severe thickening skin, especially around the nose. Also experiences symptoms of the above types of Rosacea.
  4. Ocular Rosacea: Eye irritation, inflammation and light sensitivity, plus the same symptoms of the other types of Rosacea with emphasis on the skin around the eyes.

You can read more about these subtypes and what they look like from the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

How is Rosacea treated?

There are many different treatment options for Rosacea. The first step a dermatologist will likely take will be helping identity and avoid “triggers” that cause flare-ups. These triggers could include certain foods or environmental factors — like exposure to a cold wind or becoming overheated.

Another important step to reduce the symptoms of Rosacea is to use 24/7 sun protection. This can include using SPF every day, wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, seeking shade outdoors or completely avoiding direct sun exposure on the affected areas of skin.

A dermatologist can also prescribe both topical and oral medications to help with Rosacea.

Medical Spa Treatments for Rosacea

On top of the above treatment options, there are also a few treatments that can be performed at any licensed Medical Spa to improve Rosacea symptoms.

Laser and light treatments

There are a few different types of laser and light treatments available to help reduce the symptoms of Rosacea. These include:

  • Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) can help reduce visible blood vessels and redness.
  • Pulsed-Dye Lasers can also reduce both visible blood vessels and redness, as well as aid topical creams in reducing inflammation.
  • CO2 Lasers and erbium YAG lasers can help with areas of skin thickening.

LUX ~ A Medical Spa provides treatment with both the HALO Hybrid Fractional Laser (HFL) and the Sciton® BroadBand Light (BBL) — the world’s most powerful IPL device on the market. Depending on the type of Rosacea you have, a Microlaserpeel at LUX  may also help reduce symptoms.

Facials

Certain types of facials — especially Hydrafacials — can help improve skin health without leading to a flare-up.
